In Which Nasty Prehistoric
Worms Attack; and
In Which Our Heroes Learn
Napes Can Be Really, Really Sexy
This is a classic X-file from start to
finish. Nasty and weird deaths, a remote location, extra people for
Mulder and Scully to mistrust, a way-out Muldertheory that's mostly
proven right, many "Scully here is a medical doctor" moments ... why,
it has everything!
Since I didn't get a chance to rewatch
this one, I'm going with a bulleted format this time to get everything
in. Thanks to CarriK's transcript for the help. :)
- That opening scene where Mulder and
Scully meet the other scientists always makes me giggle. "Hi, nice
to meet you," hand-shaking all around, all nice and friendly. And
then they all have to flash ID to satisfy Hodge. Wow, someone more
paranoid than Mulder!
- And then there's Bear, one of the most
aptly-named characters in XF history. Nice guy, eh? I'd feel really
secure with him flying, especially since he declares himself the only
one willing to do it. And then he gets them there in one piece and
promptly gets chomped by the mad dog. Bye-bye, Bear.
- You know, now I wonder now if Queequeq
was the first man-eating dog on XF. What *did* that poor thing eat
up in Icy Cape on its own for days?
- A snicker-worth moment -- Scully:
"What if that single-celled organism is the larval stage of a larger
animal?" Hodge: "That's kind of a leap, don't you think?" Gasp! Scully,
making a leap??
- Impromptu surgery is always such fun,
isn't it? Nasty, too. Although I have to ask the question others have
asked: Just how did Scully find the equipment to dig the other worms
out of the hypothalamus? I don't think there would have been a cranial
saw just sitting around waiting for someone to need an autopsy.
- Another quick nitpick: Why can't these
supposedly educated, trained people learn not to walk into a possibly
contaminated area without guarding against airborne contaminants?
Well, I guess they finally did, by "Field Trip," at least. Took them
long enough.
- Oooo, a good, intelligent Mulder/Scully
argument, even if we don't get to hear all of it. To kill the parasite
or not?
- Oh, but if Scully's mad, maybe she's
infected, so let's all strip in front of each other. Scullyslash alert!
- And I don't care *what* anyone says;
I think Scully is adorable in the ponytail-and-flannel look. (grin)
- The tension between Mulder and Scully
throughout this episode is magnificently done. They're given good
reason to mistrust each other -- and this is very early
in their partnership -- and yet they manage to pull each other back
from the edge again
and again.
- Neck check! Neck check! UST alert!
This is one of most pure erotic moments in the history of the show,
and no one even took off any clothes. Well, not in *that* scene, anyway.
(grin)
- The climactic scene is quite fun,
what with all the lab equipment flying and that worm-insertion moment,
right out of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." *shudders* Ick, I
think I might rather go nuts and shoot myself in the head.
- Unsurprisingly, all the evidence disappears.
Even the standalones turn into semi-mytharcs a good portion of the
time, don't they?
