Mulder and Scully were huddled together in the ice and snow trying to keep warm. The sound - any sound was welcoming that would cut through the eerie silence they were growing accustomed to right now. Unsteadily rising to his feet, Mulder reached for his partner only to noticed that she had drifted off to sleep again. He picked her up and carried her to the waiting chopper. "I'll take her!" the man shouted above the roar of the spinning blades. Mulder was a little reluctant to hand Scully over to someone he didn't know, but what other choice did he have. They had to get out of here before they froze to death. He reached down and took her from her partner's arms as Mulder quickly stepped up into the helicopter. Sitting down, Mulder held out his arms to their rescuer and he placed Scully back into his waiting arms. Scully opened her eyes, somewhat disoriented by the new surroundings, but Mulder was holding her and she felt safe. She knew they were in a helicopter, hopefully being taken some place warm. Mulder whispered something to her, however she was unable to hear it above the noise of the engine. She asked him to repeat it, but instead he pressed his lips against her wet hair. It was more than likely words of comfort and assurance that they would be safe and warm soon. She closed her eyes again. Ten minutes later, the helicopter landed. The pilot and co-pilot alighted first, scrambling to help their weary passengers. Mulder jumped down and offered assistance to his partner. She grabbed his hand before slowly climbing down to the ground. They were quickly ushered into a small building. It looked like a hospital, but on a much smaller scale than the agents were used to seeing. There were four beds in the front with a plastic curtain that could be pulled around each one similar to an ER or ICU unit. Before Mulder or Scully could say anything to each other, they were being pulled in opposite directions. "Hey, wait . . . Where are you talking her?" Mulder asked, raising his voice. "Where is she going?!" "Sir, she needs medical attention." a nurse at his side stated. "I want to be with her. Now!" Mulder demanded. "Sir, after your wife is examined you can see her." ***** Scully kept looking behind her desperately trying to see Mulder. They must have ushered him into another part of the hospital or behind a curtain. She wanted to make sure he was all right. She needed to see for herself. However, there were more pressing problems right now. She had to get out of these clothes. How was she going to explain the jelly-like substance to the doctors? Besides, the lining of her coat was sticking to her skin. This stuff was starting to feel like glue and itch like hell. Trying her best to sound lucid, she asked them where the shower was located. "Ma'am, we need to take a look at you." the doctor stated. She was about Scully's age and her face was filled with concern. Being a doctor herself, Scully knew what that was like to be worried about someone needing immediate medical attention. "I need to get warm. I'm so cold. I'll only be a few minutes." Scully was pleading with her now. "All right, but I'm going to be right outside the door in case you need some help." she said. Scully nodded. "I understand." Scully was shown to the bathroom. After the doctor reiterated the warning, Scully closed the door and began peeling off the clothing Mulder had dressed her in. Setting the water to the hottest setting possible, she began to wash off the gel coating her skin and hair. The shower felt wonderful. There was a white bathrobe hanging on the back of the door. She slipped it on and opened the door, only to see the doctor waiting impatiently. She introduced herself as Dr. Reilly, one of the emergency physicians here. Scully did the same and she began to take her vital signs. Scully was only half-listening to her as she kept looking around anxiously for Mulder. He must be in one of the other rooms that were closed off to anybody except staff. She hoped a doctor was examining him, as he had lost consciousness a couple times before these people came to their aid. Dr. Reilly noticed her patient was distracted. "I know you want to see your husband soon." Husband? She thought they were married. A man and a woman stranded together. I guess it was only natural to jump to that conclusion. "I'm very worried about him. I'd like to see how he's doing." Scully decided to play along. "That's understandable after the ordeal you both have been through. Another day and I don't know if the two of you would still be alive. The last two survivors of the plane crash." Dr. Reilly explained. Well, not only were they married, but they also had survived a plane crash. This was getting more interesting by the minute. "How long have you two been married, Dana?" "We . . . We've been together for 5 years." "What happened after the plane went down?" Dr. Reilly asked. "I . . . I'm not to clear on that. All I remember is being cold. My . . . My husband got me away from there and we were just walking trying to . . . get away from it. If he hadn't been there I would have . . . died." Scully wiped the tears away. She just wanted to see Mulder. "I'll go see about getting you some clothes and something to eat." Scully nodded. After the doctor left, she got up and picked her clothes off the bathroom floor. In an attempt to fold them so they wouldn't look like they'd been dipped in oil, she pulled something out of the pocket of the jacket. It was her gold cross. Was there no end to this man's rescue ability? Not only did he make sure she was safe, but her jewelry was returned to her as well. Looking in the mirror, she fastened the chain around her neck. Scully felt complete now. ***** Mulder was lying in a bed still wondering why he couldn't see his "wife." They probably got that idea because they were together and he was holding her during the chopper ride here. He didn't correct the error, thinking maybe he would be allowed more contact with Scully if they thought he was her husband. But there was more. The staff thought they had survived a plane crash, too. Mulder didn't know why he kept playing along with this scenario, but he couldn't tell them the real truth. No one would believe it. For all he knew there could be a plane crash. He had been out of touch with the news of the world for the past couple of days. Right now his world began and ended with the woman receiving medical treatment in another room. After being examined and questioned about the plane crash, which he basically told them that he did everything possible to keep his wife safe, he was allowed to shower. Mulder was given some warm clothing to put on as well. A nurse was going to bring some food to him shortly. Hopefully after that he could see Scully. He hoped she was going along with the marriage-plane crash story or things were about to get interesting pretty soon. ***** As Scully ate, she thought of how to tell Mulder that she is pretending to be his wife. Apparently he also played into the marriage facade, or they would be fielding more questions from the staff. Dr. Reilly also informed her that they couldn't find any clothes that would fit her right now. Obviously, there was no Petite department in this facility. Scully said that she didn't mind wearing something too big for now. However, the doctor was determined to find her patient something more appropriate by tomorrow. ***** Mulder was shown to a private room near the back of the hospital. It looked like a place where one of the staff could crash. There was a bed, closet, small table and chair. A bathroom was located off to the left. "Would this be all right for you and your wife?" the nurse asked. "Yes." Mulder murmured. After asking if there was anything else he needed, she left and closed the door behind her. Mulder looked at the bed and thought about sharing it with Scully tonight. Ok, now he was getting a little bit *too* carried away with this marriage fantasy. He could see nothing wrong with sleeping next to her, making sure she was fine during the night. However, Scully might be of a different mindset. Opening the closet, he pulled out two white blankets and pillows and put them on the bed. He wondered when Scully would be joining him. After ten minutes of waiting, Mulder laid down on the bed. Stacking the pillows behind him, he worried about Scully. He hoped she was all right. Hopefully, it was just a case of frostbite and nothing else out of the realm of possibilities of a plane crash. She looked fine on the outside, but there is no telling what being in that pod did to her. Mulder kept remembering how she looked in there. Terrified. He knew that image would haunt him for the rest of his life. At least he got there in time to save her. She had to be all right. Besides, they would have told him being her "husband" and all. Mulder pulled the blanket over himself and closed his eyes. Scully opened the door. She immediately saw Mulder sleeping on the bed. He looked all right. She noticed a cut above his right eyebrow, hopefully that was the only injury he incurred rescuing her. It just sunk in now to what lengths he would go to save her. God, she would have died in that frozen hell. Imprisoned forever without ever seeing him again, without him knowing how much . . . Tears ran down Scully's cheeks as she watched him sleep. He was wrong, *she* owed him everything. Mulder blinked and opened his eyes. The sound of her crying awakened him. Sitting on the edge of the bed he looked at her. She was wearing a white bathrobe, not unlike her own and the necklace. She must've found it in the parka. Her hair was damp from the shower and except for the frostbite on her face, she looked fine. Scully saw that they were able to accommodate him with clothing. He had on a gray thermal undershirt and a pair of sweat pants. She was about to ask him what happened to his forehead, but realized that wasn't important. They were alive. Together. Right now. Mulder held out his arms to her and she went into them instantly. She was balanced on his lap with her arms around him tightly, crying. He held her snugly against his chest while reaching over to turn off the bedside lamp, bathing the room in darkness. Mulder shifted to the middle of the bed with Scully. He pulled the blankets around them, enveloping her with the warmth of his body and the bedding. Scully's tears quickly turned into exhausted sobs. She felt Mulder's arms tighten around her and his lips brush against her forehead in an attempt to comfort her even more. She cried herself to sleep knowing how lucky she was to have this man in her life. If anyone came in accidentally or on purpose, they would see a couple showing without words how much they loved one another. And that was the truth. END Well, how was it!! - L.
