SPOILER:::: Biogenesis ~~~~ Tree of Life ~~~~ "Then the LORD God said, 'See, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might reach out his hand and take from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever' -- therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken." -- Genesis 3: 22-23 ~~~~ They were one breath, living and knowing, seeing clearly and understanding all things. Her body turned on its own, tucked into his arms, and stayed there while her mind was buffeted by the strong winds of new knowing, and she shivered, feeling her strength fall away in layers. They were shedding their old ways like snake skin, peeling away the lies and untruths they had been told from birth, and the process made them tremble on their feet. She saw a bird, knew how it flew, could direct its pattern with her mind, and could feel its fear, its heighth, its impression of the world from so far above. He pictured a bear, and slashed his claws along a honey-filled tree, taught its cubs how to fish in the rushing rivers, and placed it beneath the ground for winter slumber. She walked with the lioness, groomed its fur with her tongue, slinked along the savannah with the pride, felt the great teeth sink into warm flesh, and appreciated the art in her hunt. He whistled lonely and forlorn to the whales, heard their songs vibrate through his body like a lover's touch, thrilled in the whisper of air bubbles sliding along his skin, and swam fluidly through the deep ocean waters. From animals, they were taught life and its processes, and from the air, they learned speed and panic. In the water, there was physics and math, and on the land there was beauty and art. In the heavens, Scully praised God with the angels, and beneath the ground, she screamed with the sinners. Mulder felt the chase of the dinosaur, and the aching need of the lost ghosts roaming the earth for eternity. They joined in their journey, formed and fused like matter and anti-matter, colliding and exploding with energy and life, like nothing they'd known or imagined. In the midst of knowing, she felt his arms tighten around her and his heart beat beat beat beneath her ear. It brought her back from her flight, and she opened her eyes even as they continued on, seeing the waves wash around them, swirl between her legs and caress her knees. She breathed in tandem with him, feeling the energy slipping and crackling around them like fire or lightning, and then it stopped. It swirled down around them and she felt their Becoming slip back into reality. She opened her eyes, and realized with shock that her eyes had been closed, even as she had seen the water, seen the air about them. Her head lifted and she looked into Mulder's eyes, breathing shallow and quick. "Mulder?" He brushed his thumbs along her cheek, blinking. "Did you feel that?" He nodded and she closed her eyes, trying to recapture that feeling. What she felt was his lips glancing along her mouth, then his hands in her hair, holding her head to his kiss, as if he was afraid she'd pull away. She surged into him, her fingers curling into fists and circling his waist. She tasted their journey in his mouth, the hunt of the lion, the song of the whale, the flight of the bird, the very essence of nature and the supernatural. When they touched, they were together again, seamless and whole. She felt complete. She felt she'd found her home. He pulled away, but she still felt them, still felt the other part of her in him, and she opened her eyes, trying to remember to breathe. He was grinning at her, smirking almost, and she smiled back. They stepped out of the water together, his hand caught in hers, and the waves splashed high against them, the spray salting her lips and nose. "How are you feeling?" she said finally. He cast a sly look over at her and she pushsed on his arm, rolling her eyes. "I mean your head. . ." He shrugged. "It's gone right now. . .but I can still hear. . . something." "Voices?" Mulder's brow wrinkled in concentration. "Not voices. . .just one. . .I think." She tightened her grip on his hand, trying to keep herself from disappointment, wishing that they had something concrete to bring back and prove that this was. . .was. . . "What is this, Mulder?" "I have no idea. . .no idea." Scully glanced up at him, but he was lost in thought. "Do you feel that, Scully?" The sand was soft under her bare feet and the sun was setting over the land like a brush fire. She could almost catch the rays in the water, and they made the horizon glimmer like a lightning bug. "Like a buzz?" She sighed. "Not-" She stilled. A buzz. Right on the edges of her mind, just at the fringes of the water, along the top of the sky, in between the sand at her feet. Buzzing, like energy. Like the distant hum of sex and love, or the whisper of Mulder in her ear. "I like it long," he said suddenly. She did a double take, her hand flexing in his grasp, frowning. "What?" "Your hair. You're thinking about cutting it? Why? I like it long. . . it's already so short." She stared at him, confusion charging her eyes with blue brilliance. "The buzz." Licking her lips carefully, she touched his waist. "You mean you can hear me in your head?" He grinned. "Only if I really concentrate on it." She shivered. "That's not good. . .Mulder. . ." He leaned against a rock outcropping, pulling her to his chest, and running his hands along her shoulders. "Listen. Hold on, listen to the buzzing." She was frowning when his fingertips slipped her eyelids closed, and she breathed in softly, trying to listen. The buzz grew louder, more like a soft whisper that gradually turned up, and she could tell that they were thoughts, cascading through her mind fast fast as a waterfall. Her eyes flared open and her lips parted to say something, but he was leaning in again, pressing his mouth to hers. "Do you believe me, Scully?" She nodded into his lips, feeling that same wholeness descending over her like a gentle cloud of touch. "I believe you." ~~~~ end adios RM
