"Intimate Deception: Betrayal" by Lisa (haven599@msn.com) Another couple weeks passed and I was still seeing Kelly. Nothing had changed. Scully had been harder and harder to get out of my mind. Sexually, at least. While she wouldn't dress provocatively because of her job, I fantasized about what she looked like underneath her suits. I hoped it was the way Kelly looked when she was with me. It was a warm, sunny afternoon, and Kelly was sitting on my lap, her legs draped over my right thigh, wearing nothing but a black bra and panties. "Do you think she wears things like this?" I asked, tracing the outline of the lacy cup. "I'm sure she does," Kelly replied. "You're just guessing, right?" I said. "What do you want me to say, Mulder?" "I don't know," I tell her. "Something encouraging." "Okay, you'll tell Scully and the two of you will live happily ever after," she said. "Yeah, like that will ever happen," I replied sarcastically. "I don't foresee a happy ending for us. Good fortune just doesn't follow us around." "What's the worst that can happen?" Kelly said. "She could say no." "We work together," I said. "It would be too awkward after she rejects me." "The two of you are going to work together for the rest of your lives?" she asked. "She may get a promotion or transfer somewhere else." "Scully would never leave me," I told Kelly. "We're committed to each other." "Aren't we sure of ourselves." Kelly slid off my lap and crossed to the desk to refill my drink, taking a sip for herself in the process. "It's complicated," I said, watching her agile body move in the lingerie I bought for her to wear. "If it wasn't you wouldn't be here and I'd be in a normal relationship." "Look, Mulder, maybe Scully -" "I don't need your advice, okay," I told her. "Don't presume to know what Scully likes and dislikes. You don't even know her." "But *I'm* trying to become her," Kelly said. "For you. It's hard to do that when you've put her on such a pedestal." "I haven't put her -" I got out of the chair, crossing the room in a few steps. Kelly was polishing off the rest of the vodka, something very un-Scully-like to me. And then it hit me - perhaps I *have* put Scully on a pedestal. I was going to apologize to Kelly, but there was a knock on the door. Then a soft-spoken voice saying: "Mulder, it's me." Shit. "It's her," I said. "Hide in the bedroom. Hurry." I watched Kelly grab her own clothes - not the ones I bought her - and rush down the hall into my bedroom. I took a deep breath before opening the door. "Scully, what are you doing here?" I said, trying to sound normal. "I wanted to see if you were done with that file." I stared at her. What file was she talking about? She stared at me like I was crazy. "The disk you told me you were taking home to finish up your report for Skinner. Remember? Mulder?" "Right. No, I haven't finished it yet. I was going to, but got . . . distracted." That was the truth. I wasn't lying. "One of your videos?" she asked. "I can imagine." "Something like that," I muttered. "Mulder, are you here alone?" "Why do you ask?" I replied. "I thought I heard something." Scully looked towards the bedroom. "No. Just me and my videos." No sooner had the words left my mouth than Kelly marched right into the room. There was an awkward silence for what seemed like an eternity. I don't think I've ever seen an expression on Scully's face like that before. "Mulder, aren't you going to introduce me to your . . . umm . . . friend?" "Kelly, this is Scully." My voice couldn't sound anymore guilty than it did right now. "Scully this is Kelly." "Hi," Kelly replied. "Nice to finally meet you." "N . . . Nice to meet you, too." Scully replied, looking like she had just come into a movie that was half over. "Mulder," Kelly said. "I have to go. See you later." She made sure she touched my arm on the way out. Scully noticed. The second she was gone, Scully whirled on me. "Mulder, who was that?" Scully asked. "Kelly." I tried to be a smartass, as always. "C'mon, Mulder who is she? She looks just like -" I didn't want her to say it. "A friend. That's all." I told her. "You want that disk now?" "No, I'd like to know who that woman is, Mulder." she insisted. "Someone I've been dating awhile." I lied. To Scully. She knew it; I knew it. "Where did you meet her?" Scully asked. "I umm. . . I . . . Frohike introduced us." Shit, where the hell did that come from? "Frohike doesn't know women like that. Nice try, Mulder," she said. "Why are you so interested in my private life, Scully?" "I'm just curious. I would tell you if I was dating someone," Scully admitted. "What's the big secret? Why was she hiding?" "She wasn't hiding. She was getting dressed. Is that what you wanted to hear, Scully?" She looked startled by my frank words. "Okay, Mulder you don't have to draw me a picture," she told me. "I just thought I had a right to know when my partner was dating someone that looked exactly like me." Dammit, she had to say it. I didn't want her to ever meet Kelly. I knew she'd react this way. With questions. Questions I wasn't prepared to answer. She had a look of disappointment on her face like I had committed the ultimate sin. "I'm sorry I interrupted the two of you. Can I have that disk now?" I took it off my desk and handed it to her. "I hope you two are happy together," she said on her way out. I listened to her long, purposeful strides as they took her all the way down to the elevator. No, we're not, Scully. How can I be happy with a substitute? *** END Like what you read?
